As a woman who has ventured into government and politics, I am keenly aware of the importance of women’s representation in these spheres. My name is Mary Hayashi, and I have had the privilege of serving as a California State Assemblywoman from 2006 to 2012 and as a Commissioner of the California Mental Health Services Oversight Commission from 2005-2012. Throughout my journey, I have recognized the transformative power of personal backgrounds in advancing public policy agendas. In this blog, I will explore why women, including myself, run for government and how our personal experiences catalyze change.

A Catalyst for Change

It is undeniable that personal experiences shape our perspectives and priorities. For women entering the realm of politics, our unique backgrounds play a crucial role in driving our policy agendas. As a Korean American who grew up in a tight-knit community, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by minority groups and underserved communities. These experiences instilled a deep sense of empathy and a desire to effect positive change.

My background strongly influenced my policy agenda, particularly in women’s health and gender equality. Having faced my unique challenges and witnessing the struggles of others, I was propelled to advocate for accessible and affordable healthcare for all. By drawing from my own experiences and those of the people I interacted with, I was able to develop a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand and create policies that addressed them effectively.

The power of personal background lies in its ability to provide a unique lens through which we view the world. It enables us to identify the gaps and shortcomings within existing systems and work towards their improvement. By utilizing our own experiences, we can identify policies and initiatives that directly and meaningfully impact the lives of individuals and communities.

Through my journey, I have recognized that personal background is the fuel that propels us to pursue positive change. It provides us with the passion, the drive, and the determination to fight for the issues that matter most to us. Through this lens, women like me enter government and state legislative offices, ready to advocate for policies that uplift and empower those historically marginalized.

For instance, as a woman of color, I have been able to relate to the experiences of marginalized groups and advocate for policies that promote inclusivity and equality. By incorporating the stories and perspectives of those we represent, we ensure that our policies address the real-life challenges faced by individuals from various backgrounds.

Women’s Issues and Advocacy

Women’s issues and gender equality are essential considerations in policy-making. Women have historically been marginalized and faced discrimination in various aspects of life, including employment, healthcare, and reproductive rights. Women in government and state legislative offices prioritize these issues to create a more equitable and just society. Throughout my career, I have been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. I believe in creating policies that support women in every aspect of their lives. From advocating for equal pay and workplace protections to promoting access to healthcare and reproductive rights, I have dedicated myself to championing the issues directly impacting women. By leveraging my background and experiences, I have understood the complexities and nuances of these issues and worked toward their resolution.

By fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity, we create a more robust democracy and promote a more participatory governance model.

As a firm believer in grassroots activism, I have actively engaged with communities throughout my career. I have worked alongside local organizations, such as Asian Law Caucus, listened to residents’ voices, and collaborated with community leaders to address their needs. By actively involving constituents in policy-making, we ensure their voices are heard, and their concerns are addressed. Grassroots movements and community engagement serve as powerful catalysts for change, allowing us to shape policies that have a meaningful impact on the lives of those we represent.  As a former member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition Board of Directors, I understand the power of grassroots movement, as we delivered over 2 million signatures to the White House, demanding more research funding for breast cancer.

Overcoming Challenges and Stereotypes

Women face unique challenges when running for office. Gender biases and stereotypes can undermine our credibility and hinder our progress. However, women in government and state legislative offices have repeatedly proven capable, dedicated, and resilient leaders. Despite these obstacles, we persevere, challenging outdated notions and paving the way for future generations of women leaders.

Throughout my journey, I have encountered hurdles and faced adversity. But I have never allowed these challenges to deter me from my mission. Instead, I have used them as fuel to propel myself forward. Resilience is a hallmark of women leaders, and it is through resilience that we overcome barriers, shatter stereotypes, and make significant contributions to government and state legislative office. In addition, by standing firm in adversity, we inspire others to believe in their abilities and empower them to pursue their aspirations.
